Maxim Panteleenko Libertad, Pieds Percussion, Trick Riding
Holding two straps of Army parachute rigging suspended from above, Maxim Panteleenko soars with the grace and precision of a hawk – circling, diving, and riding the air in the sole act in Cavalia without a horse. “Horses are definitely the stars here, but I think my role shows our humanity. It also shows what the human body is capable of doing.”
A second generation circus performer, Maxim was born in Tver in Russia and began performing with the Moscow Circus at age six. When the Communist regime collapsed his family moved to New York, leaving everything behind. “I was never pressured to be in the circus. My dad always gave me that freedom.” Max performed with the Big Apple Circus, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, Tokyo Disneyland, and SeaWorld Orlando’s “Cirque de la Mer” before Cavalia. For Maxim, the circus way is very flashy. In Cavalia, it’s more down to earth – softer, smoother, more toned down. “We work with a live band, plus a singer. It sets the distinct mood. All these pieces create the illusion. That’s the challenge. You have to know your routine, your physical abilities, and the music and make sure it all fits together. You can’t be selfish. I’ve seen all sorts of shows. Cavalia is unique. I think it has created a new ‘genre’ of entertainment.”
